ADULT LEARN TO ROW

Cooper Rowing Club will have an update on our adult Learn to Row programming for the 2026 season in mid-to-late April. Let us know at CRClearntorow@gmail.com if you would like to be notified as news about the 2026 season becomes available.

Please note: We are seeing unprecedented levels of demand for our Learn to Row programs, and space in the program will be very limited. We encourage you to cast a wide net to other clubs in the region as sadly, we will not be able to accommodate everyone who is interested in learning to row.

Cooper Rowing Club is an adult (18+) rowing club. If you are looking for information about youth rowing, please contact Cooper Junior Rowing Club. Some of the local high schools also offer rowing programs for high school-aged youth.

Learn to Row Sessions

Cooper Rowing Club’s LTR sessions are oriented towards beginners. Participants will learn boat safety, equipment handling, terminology, how to use an erg, and the basics of sculling (two oars per person) in a quad (four-person boat). The session will culminate with participants rowing singles and completing a flip/swim test. If you have previous sculling or sweeping experience, please contact us so we can assess whether LTR or other coaching is more appropriate for your skill level.

*Note: Immediately before your session begins, LTR participants will also need to purchase a $10 LTR membership with US Rowing. We’ll let you know when and how to purchase the US Rowing membership. Please do not purchase the US Rowing membership until you receive instructions from us, as the membership will expire before your session begins if you buy it too early!

Session Requirements
Our LTR sessions focus on learning technique in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. However, rowing is a physically demanding sport that requires strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. Please make sure you meet our session requirements and review the liability waiver terms prior to registering.

  • You must be at least 18 years of age and out of high school.

  • You must be able to lift and carry 30 lbs over your head unassisted: The boat you will be using weighs 120 lbs, and you and your three boatmates will need to carry the boat over your head for 30 yards, from the boathouse to the dock.

  • You must be able to perform a deep squat and return to standing without support: Stepping from the dock into the boat requires the strength, flexibility, and balance to lower yourself from a standing to sitting position in a tight space, on an unsteady surface, with little support.

  • You must be able to swim/float/tread water unassisted for 10 minutes.

If you or your healthcare professional have concerns regarding your health, fitness, flexibility or ability to complete the physical requirements listed above, please contact us prior to registration.

Please email CRC for additional questions about LTR or if encountering problems with registration.

Membership in Cooper Rowing Club:
Upon successful completion of our LTR program, graduates are encouraged to apply for membership to Cooper Rowing Club.  As a novice member, you will be eligible to row in CRC team boats and singles.
